Mildura's 3MA set to hear Ray Hadley from 2009 Thursday 20th November 2008. It's been announced that Charles Wooley's morning show "Across Australia" has been cancelled, so there's many stations around regional Australia that are looking for a new morning host to tune into
Sydney's 2GB has come to the call of 8 regional stations that used to take Charles Wooley, set to network Ray Hadley from 9am - 11am weekday mornings, starting next year, in the list of stations, only one Victorian town will get to hear it, with Mildura's 3MA being classed as "near" NSW to broadcast the show
Previously, Ray Hadley has only been heard on 3MA during the Olympics, as 3MA is not a NRL broadcaster, so technically, this is Ray's first big break in the morning slot, heard in Victoria

Noise FM Didn't Want 1611 Afterall Wednesday 8th October 2008. After grabbing the 1611 licence from Double X, shortly after the licence was taken off their hands after 60 days notice, Noise FM have had some time to think about the best use for the narrowcasting licence, and have decided to sell it
Noise FM have already been established into Colac, Ballarat, Bendigo, Maryborough and even Mt. Gambier, but all licences are on the FM band, which leads the theory that the Noise FM product wouldnt work on AM in Melbourne
While the paperwork has been signed and all confirmation is almost settled, it's not been known to the public yet as to who won the licence from Noise FM, some suggestions include The Goanna, Vision FM or Rete Italia

Double X Lose Licence Wednesday 20th August 2008. Independent radio station, Double X will be forced off air after the owner ran out of time to renew the licence after 60 days
Station owner, Anton Vanderlely who also does the breakfast shift on Double X, has also let the licences of 1611 in Traralgon and Wingfield in South Australia slip through the 60 days, as a result, a new owner has instantly got the licences, with the official notice yet to be released
Double X started as City FM didnt make it to the permanant radio scene when new licences were being handed out, being on 1611 AM was probably going to be a challenge, but with public outings and letting Melbourne know exactly where to find them, interest was raised and in a time of when many capital cities have a network on 1611 AM or 1620 AM, Double X was one of the independents of the Narrowband that lasted the longest
What will happen now? The 1611 AM broadcast will cease formally at the end of August, the Traralgon and Wingfield transmitters were never on, so a new oppoortunity has been created for a new independent or another outlet for a network who doesn't have a Melbourne, Traralgon or Adelaide station
A new home would no doubt be found for many programs Double X currently broadcasts, including The Travelling Fisherman, Pet Talk Radio, Tech Talk Radio, Back To The 80's along with sporting coverage of the Melbourne Ice Hockey games, but the VFL still has 3SER taking selected games on the weekends
Having said all of this though, the Double X group isn't exactly gone, as they still have their 87.6 transmitter broadcasting from Moorabbin, no doubt a wider network is being looked on similar frequencies elsewhere
Related Articles: Double X Website STATEMENT: As a former volunteer of Double X, I'm sad to hear about the mixup with the renewal process, it's been proven before that you can't let anything slip in the radio industry, as other radio stations in Victoria have proven, it's unfortunate to happen to an independent outfit like Double X
In my time with the station, I was on air every Saturday morning back in 2004 to 2005, this gave me a great chance to improve on my radio skills, taking calls and some productions stuff as well. The skills I've learnt from the whole experience will surely be used in the near future
But for now, whoever the new owner of 1611 in Melbourne shall be, they're going to have a tough time to fill the shoes of what Double X has created on 1611,

Cybershack Finishes Up On The Radio Thursday 7th August 2008. Charlie Brown will be heard for the last time this coming weekend, as the Cybershack radio show is officially finished
The show started back in 2000 when all the rumours of a Y2K bug were going around, after that technology scare CBN Media decided to create a show starting out on a small network of radio stations, then expanding
It was only earlier this year though that the network feed from the Gold Coast, that provided Cybershack via a satellite to Star FM stations in Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton, Albury/Wodonga and the Latrobe Valley, decided to stop taking the show, therefore forcing each station to play it locally at another time, which didn't happen
Those who aren't part of the Star FM group of stations, kept on going, even if it was only two by the shows end, with Ballarat's Power FM and Melbourne's Double X being the survivers of the show in Victoria
Cybershack has been on air from their Sydney studios for 8 years, that's 445 episodes with Charlie Brown hosting every one of those episodes, talking about technology, gadgets and games among other stuff all being technical
After this weekend, Power FM and Double X might look to replace the timeslot with another technology show, or maybe just music
But there is some good news, with Cybershack still being on the TV every Saturday afternoon, at the moment the Nine Network and Imparja in selected areas are showing it, with WIN still deciding to play alternate programming

In the meantime, Fresh 89.5 and Pheonix FM are still sharing the 89.5 frequency

The segment named "Ask The Experts" with resident Tech "Guru" Ray, basically mentioned some facts the public dont know, mainly due to the lack of publicity that digital radio is getting, it's set to start on Janurary 1st 2009, and will be an enhancement of what is already available
It was also mentioned on air, that Digital radio wont become the only way we all listen to the medium, with analogue staying on air, indefinately
The episode explaining the technology, has already aired on Star FM and Power FM, but is still coming this weekend on the ACE Radio Network's Mixx FM, Coast FM and 3TR FM along with independant Double X

Korumburra Has An 80's Station Thursday 6th March 2008. There's an 80's music station in Korumburra, and you can find it on 87.6, interestingly though, the licence is held by the owner of the Orbit FM Dance radio network. The new station is called Radio 80's, and is set to sound different from what Orbit FM normally plays
The station is set to play only 80's music, similar to what Double X in Melbourne is doing, and have a link with the local Tourist Railway, based in Korumburra, to who the webpage is registered to
There are some concerns though, that the new owners of 3GG, who are set to drop the Gold Coast feed, might take an interest in the station, as it also plays the same mix of music

East Gippsland's 3GV goes, as Gold 1242 arrives Saturday 1st December 2007. At midday, on Friday the 30th of November, East Gippsland's Classic Hits station, 3GV became Gold 1242 straight after John Laws signed off for the final time
At the same time, a new localised radio station was being promised, instead of all the networked talkback that was on 3GV, the new Gold 1242 will be going for a music orientated sound
But the confusing thing is where the website for Gold 1242 is. At the moment, the old 3gv.com.au is redirecting to a URL that doesnt exist, so the link from theradio.com.au website, is the only way to read about the station, and listen online

Stan Zemanek Dies at Age 60 Thursday 12th July 2007. Sydney broadcaster Stan Zemanek, who was battling a brain tumour last year, has died in his Sydney home at 2:45am Thursday morning
The broadcaster was on Foxtel's Beauty and the Beast, which then made it's way to Channel Ten. That was before he decided to take on the drive spot at Melbourne's 3AW in 2002
After deciding to come back to Sydney, he was slotted into the night time spot where he was previously doing well, and continued where he left off
He signed off from radio in December last year, to spend more time with his family.
Victorian stations that used to take Stan Zemanek's program, before the merger of RG Capital and DMG Regional Radio included Bendigo's 3BO FM, Mildura's 3MA FM and Albury/Wodonga's 2AY. But before that, he was also heard on 3CV 1071 before it was sold to become Easy Listening 1071, on which Stan was taking calls from Central Victoria complaining that they can't hear his show anymore, That was when 3BO FM came in.

The only reason he said it then, was because the media knew what John Laws wanted to keep a secret, that was that he shall retire from on air duties at 2UE in November, not stating a particular date, but even he thinks he might not last that long, but at the same time definately ruled out going any later than November
The 71 year old vetran broadcaster is in his 55th year as an on air presenter, being in many roles throughout his career, his retirement speech included a thank you to all his supporters over the years, he also reconised those people that dont like his show, despite listening to him

It's also been reported that Double X have scored the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) as well, the first station in Australia to follow an Ice Hockey League, in particular the "Melbourne Ice" team. Sport 927 may close in Shepparton and Ballarat Monday 26th March 2007. Racing broadcaster Sport 927 may not be broadcasting into Ballarat and Shepparton if the ACMA doesnt grant the network an exemtpion to a certain part of a new act that was introduced at the start of this year
As many media networks have been reporting already, these new rules included that all commercial stations provide at least 4 hours of local content on air. The owner of Sport 927 has written to be exempted or temporarily relieved of this act for the time being, but the ACMA hasnt been willing to give them the exemption
Most of Sport 927's transmitters in Victoria are all narrowcast licences, so it wouldnt conern the network as much, but the Shepparton and Ballarat licences are commercial, after 3SR and 3BA moved from the AM band to FM to vacate their AM frequencies for the racing network. But the licences didnt get converted to narrowcast, like the Bendigo licence did. So being a commercial licence means there's more transmitter power covering the town
The problem for Sport 927 is that there are no offices or studios in either Ballarat or Shepparton, so providing local content would be difficult. So the owner of the network has already commented on the situation, saying the stations in Ballarat and Shepparton could close down
If this was to be the case, the racing network would want to consider a narrowcast licence, probably on the FM band around the 87.6 to 88.0 range. This would mean their coverage is limited to the area, and towns in the Goulburn Valley including Euroa, Benalla, Nagambie, Seymour, Tatura, Tongala and Kyabram would all need to be covered with local transmitters for each town

Seymour station off air Tuesday 16th January 2007. Seymour's 87.6 is off the air after 3 months of broadcasting on an expired licence
It's now expected that the licence will go to an auction in February, but it's unclear whether that'll definately happen or not after Castlemaine's 87.6 hasnt been reported as being auctioned off yet
The situations differ between the two towns, as in Castlemaine's case the licence was handed back to the ACMA after Vision FM didnt put anything on air as the licence expired.
But in Seymour, the licence expired while the station kept on broadcasting, in the wierdest of circumstances
It's now tipped that Vision FM could pick up the licence in Seymour, but dance music station Orbit FM, relaying Kiss FM could be on the lookout also, or Kids broadcaster from Maqcuarie Regional Radioworks, Kids FM, might be interested
But then again, could a country music station be coming to town? We'll keep you posted on the results

Bendigo's 89.5 Might Not Be Community Thursday 28th December 2006. Last month it was reported that Fresh 89.5 had been investigated by the ACMA for not renewing their licence in time. And the licence would expire
The ACMA told the station that it would work on a TCBL licence until a new aspirant was found to use the frequency, but a new report has found that Bendigo could be served by another ABC station, one that wasn't listed in the September 2004 list of towns about to recieve a new ABC station. In this case, it would be News Radio
If News Radio was to get the licence of 89.5 in Bendigo, it would mean that Central Victorian towns would be able to hear the Parliament News Network, instead of relying on 1026 AM from Melbourne.
Ballarat is also not listed to get a News Radio frequency, but the suggestion of 97.5 FM, which was formally used by the Community radio station back then known as Triple B, Now Live FM on 99.9 FM, is being considered. But could the RPH network be looking into the Ballarat market on that frequency?
While this speculation is still going, Fresh FM are left with few options to consider, one of them could be that they will share the 101.5 FM frequency with the Central Victorian Christian station from Harcourt, who are still fighting to get a licence of their own
But the General Manager of Fresh FM said that he wouldn't let the licence go without a fight, and already has signatures for the licence to be returned, but will the ACMA accept that?

AFL Announces New Radio Rights Thursday 19th October 2006. It's now official, the AFL has confirmed that 3AW, Triple M, ABC Local Radio and SEN will all be broadcasting AFL matches for 3 years from 2007
This means, due to 3AW and Triple M paying more for the rights, they will get the first choice of matches to broadcast on Saturday afternoon, while SEN and ABC Local Radio will be broadcasting the other match which is most likely of lower appeal to the audience, or involving teams that are lower on the ladder
On Sunday's, 3AW and Triple M have the 2pm match while SEN and ABC Local Radio will be broadcasting 2 matches involving the 1pm and the new Twilight match set to be starting at 4:45pm
This means that every match, even if played in Canberra, Launceston or the Gold Coast, will be broadcast into Melbourne on at least one radio station. As we pointed out earlier this year, when Hawthorn were going to play the Kangaroos in Launceston, no radio station was going to broadcast the match, mainly because all of the AFL rights holders went to Geelong to broadcast the Geelong v Melbourne match. No station in Melbourne wanted to go to Launceston, except Magic 1278 who were giving their call to Perth's 6PR, but this situation won't happen again under the new deal
Currently, 3AW's footy call can be heard on the ACE Radio Network regionally in Hamilton, Colac, Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Traralgon, Horsham and Albury/Wodonga. Triple M's footy call can be heard on the Maquarie Regional Radio Works network, which can be heard in Bendigo, Shepparton, Warragul and Mildura with Wangaratta's Edge FM taking it as an independant station. But will SEN make any regional affiliates next year? Maybe one of the two FM commercial stations in Albury/Wodonga will take on the SEN call. We'll find out soon

It's also a good reminder for anyone who wants information on the bushfires that may occur, to check out CFA's Incident Summary page (link is below).
As you may remember, last summer we streamed 774 while the bushfires were occuring, But with the ABC deciding to put 774 on their streaming list, there's no need for us to stream is this summer, but in the situation that certain stations have a local presenter taking calls on the local situation while 774 is playing sport or a Sydney feed, we'll investigate what streaming options we can present online (depending on the reception).
As it stands, ABC Western Victoria via their Horsham transmitter on 594 is the most likely option of being streamed if they decide to take on local information, which is what happened on New Years Day a year ago.
As always, we'll be updating this page during the summer, and a link to have a listen to what is happening in Victoria.

It's News Time For Regional Victoria Thursday 6th July 2006. It's taken a long time since the report into the ABC's planned transmitters for News Radio across the state, but finally there is some news on the subject.
The ABC have announced that it could be as soon as early next year when they start turning on News Radio transmitters across the nation (70 transmitters in total)
Whether the 70 transmitters mentioned included Radio National, ABC Classic FM and Triple J as well as News Radio is unknown, but it would seem News Radio is the main focus for regional Australians
Currently, News Radio is only heard in major cities and selected regional centres around the nation. But in Victoria, Melbourne is the only place with a News Radio transmitter (1026 AM)

Some of them have come on air, but this is whats left.
Latrobe Valley - (already have 96.7 Triple J, 100.7 Local Radio and 101.5 ABC Classic FM) Proposed: 95.1, 95.9 for News Radio and Radio National (you can predict which frequencies they'll be on).
Horsham - (already have 99.7 Radio National and 594 Local Radio) Proposed: 89.3, 90.1 & 90.9 for News Radio, ABC Classic FM and Triple J
Bairnsdale - (already have 106.3 Radio National and 828 Local Radio) Proposed: 102.3, 107.1 & 107.9 for News Radio, ABC Classic FM and Triple J
Lakes Entrance - (can only just get 100.7, 101.5, 96.7 from Latrobe Valley) Proposed: 92.3 (we're guessing a local ABC station)
Portland - (already have 96.9 Local Radio and 98.5 Radio National) Proposed: 97.7, 106.5 & 107.3 for News Radio, Triple J and ABC Classic FM
Western Victoria - (already have 94.9 Triple J, 94.1 Local Radio, 93.3 ABC Classic FM & 92.5 Radio National) Proposed: 91.7 for News Radio
Warrnambool - (already have 89.7 Triple J, 92.1 ABC Classic FM, 101.7 Radio National & 1602 Local ABC) Proposed: 91.3 for News Radio
Nhill - (already have 95.7 Radio National, and can recieve 594 Local Radio from Horsham) Proposed: 97.3 & 98.1 for News Radio and either Triple J or ABC Classic FM
Mt. Beauty - (no services currently) Proposed: 90.9 & 91.7 for Local Radio and Radio National (our guess anyway, to be inline with Myrtleford & Bright)
